10 Home Remedies To Lower Cholesterol Naturally

If you have high cholesterol, you’re also at higher risk for heart disease. But the good news is, it’s a risk you can control. You can lower your “bad” LDL cholesterol and raise your “good” HDL cholesterol.

You just have to make some simple changes. The following home remedies will help you reduce bad cholesterol thereby enhancing a healthier heart.

1. Onions

Onions are very effective in the treatment of high cholesterol. The sulfur content of onions is what does the magic.

Sulfur helps to reduce bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol levels and when this is done, it helps to reduce the risk of having a heart disease.

You Will Need:

  • 1 teaspoon of onion juice
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • One onion-  finely chopped (for another recipe you can also try out).
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground pepper
  • 1 cup of buttermilk

To Do:

  • In a cup, combine a teaspoon of onion juice and a teaspoon of honey.
  • Mix together and drink. Do this remedy once daily.

  • Add one finely chopped onion and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper into a cup of buttermilk.
  • Mix together and eat regularly.

2. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of the grains that has numerous benefits. It is rich in soluble fiber and beta-glucan. The soluble fiber in oatmeal helps to lower both total and LDL cholesterol levels.

If a cup of oatmeal is consumed as breakfast every morning, it helps to reduce the LDL by at least 12 to 24 percent.

You can decide to add almonds and raisins to your cup of oatmeal for added benefits.

3. Orange Juice

Orange juice contains vitamin C which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory property. Drinking up to 750 ml of fresh orange juice daily can help to naturally reduce the cholesterol levels owing to its concentration of folate, flavonoids, and vitamin C.

The vitamin C in orange helps to increase HDL and reduce LDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentration.

Apart from orange, other sources of vitamin C are as follows:

  • Citrus fruits such as grapefruit, limes, and lemons
  • Papaya
  • Strawberries
  • Kiwi
  • Pineapple
  • Green or red sweet bell pepper
  • Cantaloupe
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and broccoli

It is advisable that you drink two glasses of fresh and pure orange juice in the morning daily as this helps to lower bad cholesterol and maintain a healthy bloodstream.

 To Do:

  • Simply squeeze the pulp into a strainer.
  • You can add a teaspoon of honey as this is a healthier alternative to sugar and it will help sweeten it.

4. Honey

According to a study conducted in Dubai, people who drank solutions with honey showed a significant drop in their cholesterol levels.

Natural honey contains cholesterol-reducing components and especially attacks homocysteine.

Homocysteine is a type of amino acid known to increase the risk of peripheral vascular disease and heart disease.

Do we have to tell you how to consume honey? Simply spoon up honey and lick away!

Alternatively, every morning, you can add 1 teaspoon honey to 1 cup hot water to drink.

You can also add 1 teaspoon lime juice or 10 drops cider vinegar to give that drink a more powerful cholesterol-fighting punch. Including honey in your daily diet can help rid your system of excess fat and cholesterol. A simple step to living a healthy life. Simply honey!

5. Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry, or amla, acts as a natural hypolipidemic agent. This is because it promotes the reduction of lipid concentrations in the serum.

A study published in the International Journal of Medical Research & Health Sciences revealed that this fruit has antihyperlipidemic, anti-atherogenic, and hypolipidemic effects.

It is quite easy to use. You only have to mix one teaspoon of Indian gooseberry powder, or dried and powdered Indian gooseberries, in a glass of warm water.

Drink it daily in the morning on an empty stomach.

6. Coriander Seeds

Research has shown that coriander helps lower the levels of total cholesterol, LDL (the ‘bad’ cholesterol), and triglycerides.

Coriander seeds also have hypoglycemic effects and can be useful for diabetes management.

How To:

  • Add two teaspoons of coriander seed powder to one cup of water.
  • Boil the mixture and then strain it.
  • Drink this once or twice a day. You can add milk, sugar, and cardamom to it and use it as a replacement for your regular tea.

If you do not have coriander seed powder, you can use coriander seeds or dry roast and grind them to make the powder.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar helps lower your total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

In addition, it is a great home remedy for a number of ailments including acid reflux, high blood pressure, gout, upper respiratory infections, and others.

How To:

  • Mix one teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.
  • Drink this two or three times a day at least for a month.

You can gradually increase the amount of apple cider vinegar to two tablespoons per glass.

If you do not like the taste of apple cider vinegar, you may mix it with fresh orange juice, apple juice, grape juice, or other fruit juices.

8. Whole Grain Bread

To Lower Bad Chlosterone, ditch white bread that will just add more carbs to your body. Switch to brown rice and whole grain bread.

Not only are they tastier, but they also increase HDL levels and lower a type of blood fat called triglycerides.

Triglycerides, when high, can increase your risk of contracting heart diseases. Always select whole grain bread, brown rice, and whole wheat pasta.

It gives you enough dietary fiber to fight cardiovascular disease. The polished white rice or white bread has less amount of pure dietary fiber compared to brown bread and rice.

9. Grapefruit

Grapefruit helps to reduce high cholesterol level. Although it has a sour taste, it is amazing for the reduction of cholesterol.

It contains soluble fiber and a high concentration of pectin which is a component that helps to reduce cholesterol.

Alternatively, you can eat apples and berries as they also help to reduce high cholesterol level.

However, you have to seek medical advice before doing this remedy because the compounds react with different medications.

10. Olive Oil

Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats which help to reduce the level of LDL cholesterol in the body.

The consumption of olive oil will reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol.

Using it for salad dressings will introduce monounsaturated fat into the diet thereby, reducing the cholesterol level.

It is advised that you include olive oil in your salad dressings first before you start using it to cook. This is such that you get used to the taste.
