Eight Tutorials to Teach You How to Apply Make-up like a Pro

These tutorials are grouped into three to help you learn the steps better: creating a beautiful base, making your features stand out, and finishing up.

Group A – Creating a Fine Base

This is the first step of my makeup application tutorials. In creating a fine base for your makeup, you are, to begin with, prepping your face. This involves cleansing and moisturizing your skin. Applying face lotion and eye cream will also help.

In this group of tutorials, you will learn how to prime your face, apply foundation, and concealer.

How to Apply Makeup Like a Pro – Primer, Foundation and Concealer

Start with the primer. Applying the primer will smoothen your texture and make the makeup last longer. Use a flat foundation brush to apply the product on your face.

Next, you apply the foundation. Make sure that the foundation you are using matches your skin tone. Use a foundation brush to rub it in, be sure to blend it well on your face, jawline, and neck.

Begin from the center of your face and spread it out and down. You can also use a beauty sponge if you prefer. Do not put too much, just enough to cover all your blemishes.

It is now time for the concealer. Here, also use a shade that matches your skin tone. First, apply the concealer under your eyes using a concealer brush. Then blend it will your ring finger in a light touch.

Then dab it on other spots or imperfections and blend it well into your foundation.

While applying the concealer under your eyes, try to draw an inverted triangle and fill it up. This will create an illusion that will brighten the center of your face. Remember not to put too much; one or two thin layers are okay. After applying the concealer, set it with a setting powder.

Tip: if you have trouble covering up any blemish, try applying a spot solution that contains salicylic acid on it before using the concealer. Then dust it with a setting powder to leave it matte.

Group B – Making Your features Standout

Now that you have learned how to get your base right let us now learn how to make the features on your face stand out and look pretty. Here, I will be talking about enhancing your eyes, applying lipstick, and blush.

1. How to apply makeup like a pro – Eyebrow

As you already know, a well-defined eyebrow adds structure to your face, so make sure that they are attractively shaped. Next, you use a pencil color that matches your eyebrows to make short strokes in gaps.

Then use a makeup brush to even it into your eyebrows for a natural look. Then set them with an eyebrow gel. Adding some highlighter under the arches of your eyebrows will make them stand out even more.

Tip: if you want to project a narrow nose, draw your brows close to each other, fading them towards your nose. Also, if you do not have the eyebrow gel, you can use Vaseline.

2. How to apply makeup like a pro – Eye shadow

Begin by creating a shimmery eye base. Using an eyeshadow brush, apply a sheer shimmery cream shadow from your lash lines and spread it out to your brow bones.

Also, dot the color on the inner corners of your eyes. You can use silvery-white shade instead or a champagne color depending on your skin tone.

Next, apply a bronze shade in your creases and smudge it over your eyelids using a shadow brush. Ensure you press the eyeshadow into your eyelids rather than sweeping it across to create the perfect pop for your eyes.

Lastly, to give your eye a luminous look, pat the center of your lids with gold cream shadow and then run little of it along your lower lash lines.

3. How to Apply Makeup Like a Pro – Eyelash, Mascara, and Liner

For a start, you must invest in a high-quality eyeliner and mascara that will not smudge or smear. When you are ready, line your upper waterline and outer corners of your lower lash line with your eyeliner. To prevent harsh lines, you can blotch the product with a thin brush.

Next, you curl your lashes with an eyelash curler. Then apply a coat of mascara, you can swipe it upwards or towards your nose depending on the look you prefer.

If you intend to fix false lashes, then apply glue to your falsies while holding them with tweezers. After about 10 seconds, fix the falsies.

4. How to Apply Makeup Like a Pro – Applying Lipstick

To give your lips a good pout, first prep them with a lip balm. This will also help your lipstick last longer. Then choose a lip color that compliments your skin tone and wear it.

Another trick is to hold a tissue over your lips after you have applied lipstick and dust the tissue with translucent powder. Leave it for few seconds and remove it.

If you prefer to wear a lip gloss, add in some drops of peppermint oil to the container before applying on your lips. This will give your lips a shinier and softer look and also help the gloss last longer.

Say your lipstick is too much, and you want to lighten it, place a folded tissue paper in between your upper and lower lips, and kiss it. Then remove it.

5. How to Apply Makeup Like a Pro – Blush

Adding a blush makes your cheeks glow and appear fresh. Once you have chosen the color to use, apply the blush on the apple of your cheeks with a fluffy brush.

To help you in selecting the color; peach and pinks are perfect for a natural glow, mauves, and browns add more depth while apricot and champagne go together for a sophisticated look. Try not to mix powder and cream blushes, go for either.

Tip: when you notice you applied too much of the blush, just apply a little foundation on top and blend rather than starting anew.

Group C – Finishing Up

Now we will talk about how to give your makeup the perfect finish. You will learn how to contour and highlight. Ready? Let’s continue!

1. How to Apply Makeup Like a pro – Contouring

For a perfect contour, create shadows in the areas you want to wane. It is best to use cream products in order to achieve more natural contouring.

Carefully map out your jawline, sides of your temples, sides of your nose, and the hollows of your cheekbones using a darker shade of a stick foundation. Then use a beauty blender to blend out the product.

Another way to go about it is first to apply your bronzer in the hollows of your cheeks and along with your hair and jawline then blend well. Just ensure that you have the perfect shades in your contour palette and that you use the appropriate brushes.

Remember that the most important part of contouring is blending. You do not want any harsh lines appearing on your face.

You must also know that perfect contouring will depend totally on the shape of your face, simply use your facial bone structure as a guide.

Tip: Using the stick foundation, you can trace a line from the top of your ear to your mouth but stop right under your eyes. Then blend without trying to spread out the product.

2. How to Apply Makeup Like a Pro – Highlighting

Lastly, on my makeup application tutorials, we are learning to highlight like a pro, i.e. making some areas on your face the center of attraction.

You want to highlight areas that the light would mostly hit like your cheekbones, brow bones, above your cupid’s bow, nose’s bridge, the inner corners of your eyes, and the center of your chin.

Highlighting improves the effect of contouring. Simply apply a cream highlighter on these areas and blend well. After highlighting, you want to set it with powder so that it lasts. Then use your big fluffy brush around your face to blend them all in.
